In this book we consider how organisations can improve their employees’ experience by enabling individuals to be directed and effective, improving the cultural context within which they are working, and addressing issues that may exist with the systems or leaders they depend on. This book is a collection of case studies from a wide range of organisations, who have dealt with diverse and often significant challenges. What they have in common is they all recognised an opportunity to improve – and applied Business Psychology to achieve their desired results. Having hired star candidates (the topic addressed in the first book of this series), and improved their performance at work (the topic addressed in the second book of this series), organisations must offer a productive context within which employees can thrive. There are a wide range of illustrative initiatives shared in this book which support that objective, including working with teams, larger groups and whole organisations. Each illustrates ways and means to create alignment of employees, with shared purpose, focused on shared goals. And, as these case studies demonstrate, these initiatives help organisations succeed. Over 20 Business Psychology case studies are included in this book. Business Psychology is the study and practice of improving working life. It combines an understanding of the science of human behaviour with experience of the world of work, to attain effective and sustainable performance for both individuals and organisations. The case studies are organised in three sections as follows: First, we share examples of Business Psychology applied to preparing employees for satisfying working life. These case studies demonstrate interventions which have started in schools, pre-hire, demonstrating inclusion of diverse groups as feeders for talent pools, and also recruiting, hiring and onboarding employees in engaging ways. Second, we share examples of Business Psychology applied to enabling and developing employees and their leaders, especially during times of challenge and change. Third, we look at examples of Business Psychology applied to employee retention, sustaining longer-term, healthy and meaningful careers. The case studies shared in this book have been collected by the Association for Business Psychology through the Workforce Experience Awards Programme.
